A British court sentenced a young Algerian man to over two years in prison for stealing a handbag in central London, unaware that it contained rare collectibles worth around $3 million (2.2 million pounds), including a luxury Fabergé egg and a precious watch. The incident took place on November 7, 2024, when Enzo Contisello (29) stole a Gucci bag from a woman named Rosie Dawson while she was smoking in the designated area outside the "Dog and Duck" pub in Soho. The bag, valued at around 1,600 pounds, was left on the ground before the suspect disappeared with it within minutes. According to the court, the bag contained a wooden display box with a Fabergé egg, a luxury watch from the same collection, a laptop, AirPods, bank cards, and other personal items. The court heard that the suspect was seeking "easy money" and handed the entire bag to someone else in exchange for drugs, unaware of its true value. Judge Kate Levzey sentenced him to two years and three months in prison, describing the theft as "opportunistic and bizarre," causing severe stress and psychological impact on the victim and her company, especially due to the loss of extremely rare collectibles. Although the insurance company compensated the owner with 106,700 pounds, the egg and watch have not yet been found, and London police continue their investigation to recover them. The defense explained that the accused had worked as a chef before losing his job during the COVID-19 pandemic, after which he fell into cocaine, stating he was homeless at the time of the crime and unaware of the items' true value. Police confirmed the investigation is ongoing and urged anyone with information to come forward, noting the crime had a significant impact on the victim, who was targeted after returning from a work event.
